Ma Wei Shan farm is the source of our masterful black and white teas.
The farm was started by Mr. Zuxiang Dong—having made his fortune in the forestry business, he wanted to shift his focus to something he had more passion for: community-minded, sustainable tea. Ma Wei Shan Farm puts workers and the environment at its core.
That commitment to sustainable, organic agriculture is serious and genuine. Their organic system plans are some of the most thorough our buyers have ever seen—and the commitment to organic cultivation is shared by everyone in the organization, from management to tea pluckers.
The pluckers are granted tremendous autonomy and financial independence. All families that are part of the farm system are given free housing, education, and other skills training.
This sort of support and attention to labor standards is central to our standards for masterful tea. There is a high degree of care at Ma Wei Shan—and it's always a pleasure to visit.
Yuanzhen is a life-long farmer, but started working in tea in 2002. She's lively and unabashedly proud of her fields—keeping the tea pluckers organized and acting as an intermediary between workers and management.
Ma Wei Shan Farm develops and hires from within, providing support and opportunities to employees and their families. Her daughter provides the perfect example: while growing up in farm-provided housing, she attended school and is now a lead accountant in the office.
